AWARDS

Quality in workmanship, design, color, originality, and general appeal will be the principal criteria applied by the selection committee for admission to the show. The same criteria will also be used by the judges. There will be awards for "Best of Show", "Best Hand Quilting", as well as many other awards.

Award winners will be contacted directly by Museum Staff or Show Committee Members.

ELIGIBILITY

This show is open to all current and previous Utah residents. Quilts will be pre-selected by a committee of expert quilters from the following criteria:

1.  Quilts must be made using good construction techniques.

2.  Quilts must be clean.

3.  Quilts must be no longer than 120”.

4.  Quilts must have two layers of fabric with a batting sandwiched in between, with either machine or hand quilting.

5.  Two quilts may be submitted which have not been previously entered into this show.

6.  Quilts must have been completed within the last three years.

7.  No kits, neither full nor partial.

8.  A label must be sewn on the back bottom of the quilt with name of quilt, name of entrant, and/or who quilted it, and date completed.

9.  A hanging sleeve (see diagram) must be attached to the back of the quilt. We do not want to damage your quilt with tacks. (This sleeve is unique to this show).

Diagram of the hanging sleeve, indicating the top of the quilt, the 2" sleeve, and the raw edge, and where to handstitch across the sleeve

Step 1 —Cut a 5” strip of fabric whose length is the width of quilt top, fold it in half, press, draw a pencil line 2” below the fold.

Step 2—Lay top of fold along top of quilt just below the binding, baste with large stitches along the pencil line making sure that the basting stitches do not show on the front of the quilt. No other stitching is required. (Top and ends of hanging sleeve must be loose -- not sewn to the quilt.)

**Quilts not properly prepared for hanging following the eligibility criteria listed will be disqualified.*

JUDGING:

The Annual Springville Museum of Art Quilt Show is a juried competition. Quilts are screened by a panel of experts before they are displayed in the show. After the panel qualifies the quilts, they will be displayed and the quilts will be judged for ribbons/awards by qualified judges. Each quilt participating in the exhibition will receive critique feedback from the judges.

2026 Judges:

Liz Teerlink

Liz Teerlink has been a member of the Utah Valley Quilt Guild and the Utah Quilt Guild for over 30 years. She formed the KNOTT bee in 1994 and the group is still going strong. She has enjoyed serving in these quilt organizations in many different capacities. She has loved being a quilt teacher, quilt appraiser and quilt maker. She has been married to Craig Teerlink for 49 years and they have 4 children and 13 grandchildren. Her other hobbies include gardening, photography and scrapbooking. She and Craig are on a quest to visit all 63 of the National Parks. As of last weekend they have visited 25 parks with more planned this summer. Sadly, this adds up to so many interests and never enough time.

Deb Slechta

At the age of 12, I began my stitching journey by making clothes and home decor. It wasn’t until twenty years later I began quilting. My first quilt was a Mimi Dietrich Baltimore Album block. This was 100% handmade using batiks. I now find my joy in quilting is by creating my own quilt designs through sketching and tweaking them as I go along. I do enjoy entering quilt fairs, shows and participating in quilt challenges. I have kept the majority of my quilt sketches and consider these my quilt journals.

In my previous life, I created small wall quilts with my personal photography. I sold these at art galleries and farmer’s markets. They are called “Harmony Quilts” and on the quilt backs one could read how to get help if you or a loved one are physically or emotionally abused. I would then donate a percentage of my sales to the local women’s shelter. I also kept busy with commission work.

When moving to Moab in 2014, I became the new owner of the local quilt shop. My goal was to begin a quilt show using a singular theme and small piece of fabric. This turned into an international quilt show being hung at the local museum and art gallery. During this time I also became a regional representative for the Utah Quilt Guild. I am currently Past President and Co-Chairwoman of the 2026 Quilt Fest, “Quilting America Red, White and Blue.”

I invite everyone, especially beginners, to join a Quilt Guild. You will instantly have quilting moral support! I moved to Moab not knowing a single soul, but was immediately embraced by my quilting sisters of the local Guild, which I also had the pleasure of being President and Chairwoman of its bi-annual quilt show.

My one piece of advice? DO NOT LISTEN TO THE NEGATIVITY - NOT EVEN YOUR OWN! Everyone thought that I was crazy for learning how to quilt. No matter if you are a beginner or a strong quilter, we all need support. You will find this and more at your local and state quilt guilds.

Sharon Aposhian Wright

Sharon Aposhian Wright has had a fascination with sewing for most of her life but began quilting in earnest thirty-five years ago. She loves all aspects of this hobby- - - from choosing fabrics and patterns, to designing, to quilting, to binding and labeling the quilts. She has found that she really loves working with wools, silks, and batiks and that she always has a need to change patterns in some way to make them her own. With quilts on all her beds, quilting has become more of an artistic challenge than a necessity. Sharon likes to enter her quilts in shows because she feels that it helps her to pay better attention to fine details. She has won many awards in Utah. As past president of the Utah Valley Quilt Guild and the Utah Quilt Guild, she is active in many quilting events around the state and enjoys teaching the unique techniques she has developed.
