In This Together: Art, Belonging, and the Urgency of Social Connection

November 18, 2026 - July 3, 2027

In This Together: Art, Belonging, and the Urgency of Social Connection is a first-of-its-kind multiyear collaboration between Springville Museum of Art (SMA) and Julianne Holt-Lunstad, PhD, the nation’s leading social connection researcher and director of the Social Connection & Health Lab at Brigham Young University.

At a time when loneliness, isolation, and disconnection are impacting individual and community health in fundamental ways, the larger initiative engages art to illuminate what research alone cannot.

Phase 1 centers on In This Together, a museum exhibition co-curated by Dr. Holt-Lunstad featuring 10–15 artworks by Utah artists, along with interactive exhibition elements, a small printed catalog, and public programs designed to foster reflection, dialogue, and connection.

All Utah artists are invited to submit existing or proposed work for this innovative exhibition exploring how art can spark reflection on the role social connection plays in both our individual and community wellbeing. Up to 15 selected artists will receive a $1,000 honorarium.

Research clarifies the stakes. Art makes them human.
