Carlos Andreson Retrospective

6 January - 27 March 2009

Born in Midvale, Carlos Andreson (1904-1978) is a painter, illustrator and WPA artist known for his stylized form of modernism. Andreson studied at the University of Utah, the Art Students League in New York City and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academy Julian in Paris. In the early 1930s, Andreson received a commission to record early life in Utah in 24 sketches. These excellent renderings are primarily of historical buildings and are all still owned by the State of Utah in what is known as the WPA Collection. After this Utah work, the artist moved to New York City, where his style morphed to abstraction with vivid colors and tactile textures. These later works comprise the works in this show, all recently donated by Lynn Anderson, a descendant of the artist.
