In honor of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the Springville Museum of Art presents a new exhibition Abraham Lincoln After 200 Years. The exhibition includes paintings, bronzes and plaster casts depicting the 16th President of the United States, from his characteristic “philosopher stare” in his statesman years to versions of him as a young man splitting logs for fence rails. Each work captures a different facet of the distinguished and historic figure. Artists such as Cyrus E. Dallin, Lorado Taft, and Avard Fairbanks are included. Fairbanks boasted that he sculpted more works of Abraham Lincoln than any other artist.

Before his election as President in 1861, Lincoln made his profession as a lawyer. He also served in his homestate’s militia in 1832 during the Black Hawk War. He was a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from Illinois’s 7th district. In 1860 he won the Republican Party nomination and then the election. Lincoln is most famous for leading the country through the crisis of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.

Intending to pay tribute to this great leader in American history, the exhibition is surrounded by works from the American collection at the Springville Museum of Art. Museum director, Dr. Vern G. Swanson, remarks “We hope that visitors will be inspired to remember the great work done by Lincoln and what great effects it had on the following decades of American history.”
